After spending much of his life without many companions, Natsu has grown to be incredibly independent. He's learned not to rely on people just because he's not used to that sort of company, and is hesitant to try and make any. Nevertheless, if someone was willing to help him out in trying times, he'd be able to place an immense amount of trust in them. He'll easily warm up to anyone that comes back after his initial and habitual hostility towards them and will do his best to protect any friends he can make (although in all honesty he'll probably be the one that needs protecting). Natsu feels emotions in extremes, and any act of kindness towards him would make him feel incredibly overwhelmed. And in contrast, any act of hostility would force him to shut down. He's had little experience to balance these emotions out, making him very sensitive in certain situations as well as gullible.
Natsu's unapproachable nature makes it a little hard to get to know him sometimes. His seemingly callous persona makes him seem a little arrogant and he often gives off an "I'm better than you" aura, especially when tied with his rich boy character. He certainly is quite spoiled to an extent and likes being helped with menial tasks and being praised and complimented. In spite of this, his smug appearance is not who he really is. Natsu is fascinated by other people and is curious to get to know them, although his shy personality keeps him from being the first to speak up.

"What's wrong with you?"

At four years old, Natsu would begin to be asked the same question over and over again by his peers. Kids were cruel and anyone that was different to the majority would face persecution. In actuality, there was nothing wrong with Natsu. Born on a warm summer day, the second child to a wealthy and loving couple, Natsu was a perfectly normal child, albeit a little timid. The only thing that made him stand out from the rest was his stutter. It wasn't severe, and it could've been easily overlooked by the rest if it weren't for the select few that had nothing better to do than make the lives of the misfits miserable.

"He's like a broken record!! He can't even say his own name right!"

Children are as sensitive as they can be cruel, and Natsu took the teasing to heart and isolated himself more and more from the other kids. He was the 'defective robot Im-m-m-mai-kun," hailed as a weirdo amongst his classmates. Natsu's parents took quick notice when their child frequently came home dirtier and more troubled than an average child and contacted the school to settle the problem between their son and his peers. As it often did, confrontation with his bullies made the tormenting even worse. Natsu was subjected to more emotional bullying than before, using petty tricks like throwing his things in the trash and soaking his indoor shoes. Natsu came home looking neat and tidy after his parents' intervention, but the look on his face told them that nothing was solved.

Natsu was withdrawn from school at the age of 8 and homeschooled until he reached middle school age. His stuttering subsided naturally over the years, partly aided by a speech therapist hired by his parents. Although his impediment faded for the most part, having known that it was 'abnormal' took a blow to his self-confidence. Even the occasional trip up would bother him for days.

Sixteen year old Imai Mako dropped Natsu off on his first day of school. Taking the blame for the state of his younger brother, Mako wanted to make sure Natsu's junior high life wouldn't become a repeat of his first years of school. He should've been there for his brother when he needed it, but even he was too immature to accept his brother's speech impediment back then. As he grew older he realized his fault and vowed to protect him. Mako quickly intimidated Natsu's ex-bullies into leaving his brother alone.

Mako's actions were unwarranted, and it quickly earned him a reputation as well as his brother. Natsu took notice of this sudden rise in fame and used it to his advantage during his first year. He was weak in comparison to his brother, but the power he held was plenty. Having people think he was stronger than he actually was felt good, and he felt better about himself when he was on top.

This sheltered lifestyle, however, didn't help with Natsu's inability to make friends. His elementary school trauma kept him from making many friends, and the slight fear among his peers didn't help much either. His first year passed in an instant without much trouble other than the fact that he continued to have a hard time making friends.

Eventually he simply gave up on trying to make friends. He assumed it'd be easier on himself to stop hoping someone would talk to him. That sort of false hope was depressing. This kind of thinking was deeply embedded within him and even if someone did try to interact with him, he did little to reciprocate the action. In fact, he would avoid any confrontation with others, going as far as to suggest that he cared little to nothing about others' feelings. He would turn people away and most wouldn't come back. And if they didn't care enough to keep trying, why should he? It was a faulty way of thinking, but he assumed that it made him feel better.

It didn't. There was still a glimmer of hope inside him, one that he refused to look back to in spite of his desires. His junior high years passed in a flash and Natsu enrolled in Kaisei Academy, a good commute away from his home and hopefully away from his former classmates. Natsu's enrollment inadvertently paid tribute to that glimmer of hope. Perhaps in a faraway place, that hope will blossom again and he could start anew. Of course, this was taken with a grain of salt, but maybe Kaisei Academy's atmosphere will unblock the hourglass that kept Natsu's youth at a halt and allow the sand to flow freely again.

[TL;DR] Natsu's childhood stutter subjected him to bullying and he was homeschooled until junior high. His brother, feeling guilty about not protecting him earlier, decides to get back at Natsu's childhood bullies on his first day of junior high, earning himself and Natsu a bad reputation. Natsu continues through junior high peacefully, although he's still unable to make any friends. He enrolls in Kaisei Academy, hopeful for a change.
